Baseball team drops its first game in conference

Irvine Valley's baseball team dropped its first game in Orange Empire Conference play with a 6-0 loss to Orange Coast on Tuesday at Irvine Valley.

The game was originally scheduled for Costa Mesa, but because OCC's field was still unplayable after last weekend's rain, the game was shifted to Irvine Valley.

Irvine Valley had opened the conference schedule with wins over Saddleback and Cypress.

The Lasers just couldn't get anything going offensively on Tuesday against Orange Coast starting pitcher Art Vidro.

Vidro went seven complete innings and gave up just three hits and one walk with four strikeouts.

He improved his record to 4-0 on the season.

Dominic Purpura threw two scoreless innings in relief for the Pirates, allowing three hits with two strikeouts.

IVC got a solid start from freshman left-hander Brett DaRe'.

He pitched 6 1/3 innings and allowed four runs (two earned) on six hits with three strikeouts.

Orange Coast scored two runs in the top of the second on a double, two sacrifices and two IVC errors to take the lead and then added three runs in the top of the seventh. Chris Iriart knocked in two of the runs with a single in the seventh.

The Pirates scored their final run in the top of the ninth on an Iriart sacrifice fly.

Cody Bruder was 2 for 5 with two runs scored,  Iriart went 1 for 4 with three RBI and Justin Broussard was 1 for 3 with one RBI for OCC.

IVC freshman third baseman Adam Vargas continued his hot hitting by going 2 for 4. Sophomore second baseman Dallas Porter was 2 for 3 in the contest.

Orange Coast, ranked No. 1 in Southern California in the CCCBCA Poll, improved its record to 14-3 overall and 2-1 in conference. The Pirates have won two straight.

Irvine Valley dropped to 6-9 overall and 2-1 in conference.

The Lasers play again in Thursday, traveling to Golden West for a 2 p.m. conference game.
