Baseball team falls in 10 innings at Riverside

Irvine Valley's baseball team battled, but couldn't come up with a win at Riverside in an Orange Empire Conference game on Tuesday.

Riverside scored an unearned run in the bottom of the 10th inning to earn a 5-4 victory over the Lasers.

It was IVC's fourth straight loss in conference and dropped its record to 6-12 overall and 2-4 in conference.

Riverside improved to 10-9 overall and 4-2 in conference.

Sophomore reliever A.J. Wolfson took the loss. His record dropped to 2-1 on the season.

Wolfson pitched 1 1/3 innings and allowed one run (unearned), one hit and one walk.

Freshman lefty Brett DaRe' started the game and went five innings. He gave up three runs on eight hits and two walks.

Freshman Justin Zielinski then pitched three effective innings. He allowed one run on three hits and one walk with one strikeout.

IVC had just four hits in the game. Freshman center fielder Brett Hamilton hit a solo home run in the top of the seventh inning to give IVC a 4-3 lead.

Freshman catcher Pedro Gonzalez, sophomore designated hitter Jesus Meza and sophomore shortstop Dallas Porter each also had base hits for IVC. Meza and Gonzalez each drove in runs.

Sophomore left fielder Matt Harris scored two runs and had two stolen bases.

Riverside, which had 12 hits in the game, scored its winning run in the 10th inning on an error, passed ball, sacrifice bunt and then single.

Irvine Valley plays again on Thursday in a conference game at Fullerton at 2 p.m. It is the final game of the first round of conference play.
