Baseball team drops two straight in San Diego

Irvine Valley's baseball team dropped back-to-back games in San Diego over the weekend.

The Lasers fell to Southwestern, 5-2, on Friday, and then lost to Grossmont, 6-3, on Saturday.  

A rough inning in each game cost the Lasers.

They gave up four runs in the bottom of the fifth against Southwestern and four runs in the bottom of the second against Grossmont.

Southwestern led, 5-1, at the end of the fifth inning.

Against Southwestern, sophomore right-hander Jesus Meza took the loss.

He gave up four runs on six hits with two walks and two strikeouts in four innings.

Irvine Valley finished with six hits in the game.

Freshman second baseman Nate Cervantes was 1 for 3 with one run scored, Meza went 1 for 4 with one RBI and freshman shortstop Zach Vittetow was 1 for 2 with one RBI for Irvine Valley.

The next day at Grosssmont, Irvine Valley got on the board with a run in the top of the first.

With two outs, Meza singled to center. Sophomore right fielder Teddy Steffel then followed with an RBI double to left center.

But Grossmont came back with a run in the bottom of the first off of Irvine Valley sophomore right-hander Chris Lumanlan.

And then the Griffins scored four runs in the second inning on four hits and a walk. All four runs came with two outs.

Irvine Valley didn't score again until the top of the ninth inning when Mychal Matzek came through with a pinch-hit two run double.

Irvine Valley finished with 10 hits in the game.

Meza was 3 for 5 with a run scored. Freshman shortstop Dallas Porter went 2 for 5 and Steffel was 2 for 4 with one RBI.

Lumanlan took the loss. His record fell to 1-1 on the season.

He gave up five runs on nine hits and two walks with one strikeout in five innings.

Irvine Valley, which saw its record slip to 2-5 on the season, plays again on Tuesday when it hosts Victor Valley at 2 p.m.
