Baseball team falls behind big early in 8-6 loss to LA Harbor

Irvine Valley's baseball team heads into Orange Empire Conference play next Thursday with a record of 4-8 after losing to Los Angeles Harbor on Friday afternoon at home.

The Lasers fell behind big early and rallied a bit, but came up short in a 8-6 loss.

LA Harbor improved its record to 7-4 on the season.

It was the second time the Seahawks defeated the Lasers this week.

LA Harbor held a 7-0 lead after four and a half innings. Five of those seven runs were unearned.

IVC answered with four runs (three unearned) in the bottom of the fourth inning to get back into the game.

Freshman second baseman Nate Cervantes walked with the bases loaded for the first run. An infield single by freshman right fielder Austin Charrette brought in a run and a fielder's choice RBI brought by freshman center fielder Brett Hamilton scored another run. The fourth run came by way of an LA Harbor error.

The Lasers then pulled within 7-6 after scoring two runs in the bottom of the seventh.

Sophomore designated hitter Teddy Steffel knocked in one run with a single to right and freshman third baseman Adam Vargas brought in a with a sacrifice bunt.

But LA Harbor added another run in the top of the eighth inning for an 8-6 lead and IVC couldn't scratch out any more runs the rest of the game.

IVC sophomore right-hander Jesus Meza suffered the loss. He went 7.0 innings and allowed eight runs (three earned) on eight hits, one walk and three hit batters. He had six strikeouts.

Sophomore A.J. Wolfson pitched two scoreless innings of relief for the Lasers.

Javier Alvarez ran his record to 4-0 for LA Harbor. He went 6.0 innings and allowed four runs (one earned) on eight hits and three walks with four strikeouts.

Kyle Ulanday picked up the save with three innings of relief. He allowed two runs (both unearned) on one hit. He had two strikeouts.

At the plate, IVC was led by sophomore left fielder Matt Harris, who went 2 for 4 with two runs scored. Charrette was 2 for 4 with one RBI and Steffel went 2 for 2 with a run scored and one RBI.

Irvine Valley out-hit LA Harbor, 9-7.

Freshman catcher Pedro Gonzalez also threw out three LA Harbor base runners trying to steal in the game.

Irvine Valley plays again next Thursday. It hosts Saddleback at 2 p.m.
