Women's volleyball team ready for Riverside tonight at home

The Irvine Valley women's volleyball team, after a bye last Friday, is back in action at home Wednesday night in an Orange Empire Conference match-up with Riverside.

The Lasers have a record of 11-3 overall and 8-2 in conference.

IVC is in a virtual tie in the loss column with Orange Coast for second in the OEC standings.

Irvine Valley has won four straight matches.

It beat Santiago Canyon, 25-3, 25-11, 25-19 last Wednesday at home. The Lasers hit a season-best .412 as a team.

Four players had at least six kills for the squad. Freshman opposite Jayli Nealy ended with 13 kills and hit .400, freshman middle blocker Kaitlyn Karsten added six kills and hit .417, freshman outside hitter Emily Guenter had six kills and hit .385 and freshman outside hitter Angelina Griego finished with six kills and hit .364.

Guenter led the way in digs with 16, freshman outside hitter Jaclyn Sanchez contributed four aces and freshman setter Maddie Harkey ran the offense with 35 assists.

Nealy ranks first in the conference in kills per set at 3.76, second in total kills at 184, fourth in hitting percentage at .308 and fourth in blocks per set at 0.86. Harkey leads the conference in assists per set at 9.77, Fraser is sixth in blocks per set at 0.76 and Sanchez is eight in kills per set at .273.

Riverside has a record of 6-11 overall and 2-8 in the Orange Empire Conference.

The Tigers have lost three straight matches.

They battled, but fell at Santa Ana last Wednesday in five sets and then were swept at home against Saddleback on Friday.

Against the Bobcats, Maggie Aburto led the way with 19 kills.

She also hit .361. Hailey Gray finished with 17 assists and Jessica Lepe had nine digs.

Aburto ranks fourth in the conference in kills per set at 3.23, seventh in total kills at 152 and 10th in hitting percentage (.221).

Keylee Hober is second in blocks per set at 1.03 for the Tigers. And Ashley Elias-Romero ranks fifth in aces per set at 0.52 for the Tigers.
