Women's basketball team hosts No. 3 Orange Coast Friday

Coming off of a tough, but exciting, 51-47, win over Fullerton on the road Wednesday, the Irvine Valley women's basketball team hosts its final game of the regular season Friday at 5 p.m.

The Lasers take on another challenge, facing back-to-back state champion Orange Coast.

OCC has a record of 22-5 overall and is 9-2 in the Orange Empire Conference.

The Pirates have already captured the conference title and is ranked third in the state.

Orange Coast was upset by Santa Ana, 60-55, at home Wednesday.

Myia Collins led the Pirates with 14 points, 10 rebounds and four assists.

Alyssa Dreessen added 10 points, seven rebounds, three assists and two steals and Hailey Estrada finished with 11 points, five rebounds and four steals.

On the season, Melaiah Joseph averages 13.9 points, 6.5 rebounds and 1.7 steals, Dreessen is averaging 13.3 points and 8.2 rebounds, Zoie Lamkin averages 12.9 points and 4.0 rebounds, Collins averages 11.3 points, 9.8 rebounds and 4.4 assists and Estrada is averaging 9.2 points, 5.5 rebounds, 2.7 assists and 1.8 steals per game for the Pirates.

Irvine Valley improved its record to 15-12 overall and 7-4 in conference with the win over Fullerton.

The game was tied 47-47 with 49 seconds left, but freshman guard Samantha Barnett gave the Lasers the lead for good when she knocked down a shot in the paint.

Irvine Valley's defense was impressive, holding the Hornets to just 26.2 percent (16 of 61).

Sophomore guard Moka Saiki knocked down five three-pointers and led the Lasers with 18 points. She also added six rebounds and three assists.

Freshman forward Alexis Price had 10 points, 13 rebounds and four blocks, sophomore point guiard Haruka Mikuma contributed 11 points, three assists and three steals and Barnett ended with seven points and five steals for IVC.

On the year, Saiki is averaging 13.0 points and 2.9 assists per game.

Barnett averages 12.2 points, 5.4 rebounds and 1.9 steals, Price is averaging 9.0 points and 7.1 rebounds, freshman forward Neryah Lokeni averages 8.0 points and 5.3 rebounds and Mikuma is averaging 7.0 points, 3.0 assists and 1.9 steals per game for Irvine Valley.

The So. Cal. Regional playoff pairings will be released on Sunday.
