Women's basketball team has big match-up with Fullerton

The Irvine Valley women's basketball team takes on Cypress Wednesday night at home at 5 p.m.

It is a big match-up with both squads tied for second in the Orange Empire Conference with 3-1 records.

It is part of a doubleheader with the IVC men's basketball team, which takes on Cypress in a key game at 7 p.m.

And part of a tripleheader at the college where the baseball team starts its season against Long Beach City at home at 1 p.m.

Fullerton took on defending 3C2A State Champion Orange Coast College Wednesday night at home, but couldn't hold off the No. 2-ranked Pirates, falling, 82-59, at home.

Fullerton's record went to 15-5 overall and 3-1 in the Orange Empire Conference.

Erin Choi led the Hornets with 16 points and seven rebounds. Xochitl Hood finished with 12 points, eight rebounds and four steals and Brittlay Carillo put up nine points with four rebounds.

Julianna Conklin and Jimena Solorio each contributed eight points in the loss.

On the season, Hood is averaging 15.5 points, 8.8 rebounds and 3.4 assists, Kaylee Shimoda averages 12.1 points and 2.9 assists, Choi averages 11.2 points and 3.1 assists and Hailey Lake is averaging 9.4 points and 7.4 rebounds per game.

Irvine Valley went on the road Wednesday and pulled away to take down district rival Saddleback, 64-45.

The win was Irvine Valley's third straight in conference play and improved its record to 11-9 overall and 3-1 in the OEC.

IVC shot 49.1 percent from the field and outrebounded the Bobcats, 37-30.

The Lasers were paced by sophomore guard Moka Saiki with 20 points on 8 of 12 shooting from the field.

Sophomore point guard Haruka Mikuma and Samantha Barnett each added 14 points.

Mikuma also contributed five rebounds and four steals.

On the season, Saiki is averaging 13.3 points and 2.7 assists per game, Barnett averages 11.6 points and 5.5 rebounds and freshman guard Alexis Price is averaging 9.1 points and 6.5 rebounds.

Freshman forward Neryah Lokeni averages 8.4 points and 5.1 rebounds per game for Irvine Valley.

The Lasers take on No. 2 in the state Orange Coast next Wednesday in another conference game at 5 p.m.
