Women's basketball team has easy time with Riverside

Irvine Valley's women's basketball team needed a win to keep its postseason plans alive and the Lasers got an impressive one.

In their final regular season game, the Lasers beat Riverside City, 62-35, in an Orange Empire Conference game Wednesday night at home.

The win on sophomore and Coaches vs. Cancer night improved Irvine Valley's record to 18-10 overall and 7-5 in conference. It was the Lasers' third straight victory.

Riverside slipped to 6-19 overall and 1-10 in conference.

The Lasers assured themselves of finishing in at least a tie for third place in the conference. IVC moved a half of a game ahead of Cypress for third. Cypress had a bye on Wednesday night.

The Chargers play at Santa Ana on Friday.

Irvine Valley did much of the damage in their big win in the first half on Wednesday.

The Lasers led, 41-18, at the intermission.

Irvine Valley shot 44.1 percent (15 of 34) from the field, while Riverside shot 20.0 percent (5 of 25).

The Lasers extended their lead early in the second half. They went on a 14-2 run to open the half.

IVC took its largest lead of the game at 55-20 on a three-pointer by freshman guard Karli Kato with 10:23 to play.

Four players finished in double figures for Irvine Valley and two of them had double-doubles (points and rebounds).

Sophomore guard Jasmine Kennon, freshman center Breanna Turner, Kato and freshman forward Alexis Casillas each ended with 11 points.

Turner added 17 rebounds, which was her second straight game with 17 boards. Casillas added 12 rebounds and five assists.

Irvine Valley out-rebounded Riverside, 61-42.

Riverside got 12 points and six rebounds from Tierra Fuqua, six points and five rebounds from Kierra Carr and nine rebounds from Davina Pasillas in the game.

But the Tigers ended up shooting just 18.3 percent (11 of 60) from the field and 7.1 percent (1 of 14) from three-point range for the game.

Irvine Valley now awaits the announcement of the Southern California Regional Playoff pairings on Monday.
