Irvine Valley's women's basketball team bounced back from a tough loss in the semifinals of the Irvine Valley Tournament on Friday with a solid performance on Saturday.
The Lasers defeated Rio Hondo, 56-35, to take third-place in the event.
Irvine Valley lost to Long Beach City Saturday night, 60-48, to fall into the third-place game.
With Saturday's win, Irvine Valley improved its record to 6-4.
The Lasers shot 52.1 percent (25 of 48) from the field in the game and had 22 assists on their 25 made baskets.
Irvine Valley limited Rio Hondo to just 25.0 percent (13 of 52) shooting.
Irvine Valley led big right off the bat and was up, 33-14, at halftime.
The Lasers were paced by sophomore forward Taylor Casey with 15 points, sophomore guard Kiara King with 12 points and five rebounds and freshman center Breanna Turner with eight points, 11 rebounds, seven assists and three blocks.
It was the second good game in a row for Turner, who was named to the all-tournament team for the Lasers.
In other action
In the championship game, Pasadena City defeated Long Beach City, 69-64, in overtime to claim the title in its first year in the event.
Pasadena City (7-2) also handed Long Beach City (7-1) its first loss of the season.
Long Beach City was ranked first in the state and Pasadena City was No. 7 going into the contest.
The game was a battle between South Coast Conference rivals.
Pasadena City was paced by Kaitlyn Parks, who finished with 22 points and 15 rebounds. Desiree Loving, who was named to the all-tournament team had 15 points, Tyler Cockrom added eight points and 14 rebounds and Skai Thompson, also an all-tourney pick, had seven points and nine rebounds for the Lancers.
Long Beach City got 18 points from Abbey Goodsell and 15 points from all-tournament selection Shakeena Benton.
Neither team shot great from the field with Long Beach City hitting 31.6 percent (25 of 79) and Pasadena City making 31.9 percent (22 of 69). Pasadena City was also 0 for 12 on three-pointers.
But the difference for Pasadena came with its aggressiveness. The Lancers out-rebounded the Vikings, 67-51, including, 24-18, on the offensive end. Pasadena City also went to the free throw line 40 times, making 25 of 40.
Long Beach City was 7 of 16 from the free throw line.
Two free throws by Long Beach City's Jasmine Williams tied the game at 64-64 with six seconds left in regulation and sent the contest into overtime.
In overtime, Long Beach City held a 60-57 lead on a three-pointer by Benton with 3:40 left.
Thompson got Pasadena City within two points with a free throw and then Loving gave the Lancers the lead for good.
She drove to the basket, scored and was fouled. Loving made the free throw to complete the three-point play and put Pasadena City ahead, 61-60, with 2:20 left.
A basket by Parks made it a 65-60 game with 1:00 to go.
Pasadena City made four of six free throws down the stretch to clinch the win.
In the consolation final, El Camino defeated San Diego City, 68-57, behind 14 points and six rebounds by Shontalene Trudeau, 13 points by Nisja Bass and eight points and 11 rebounds from Clarizzah Macatugal.
Trudeau was named to the all-tournament team.
San Diego City got 17 points and 14 rebounds from Alex Warren and 15 points from Darrian Castillo.
