Men's basketball team has season end in San Bernardino

Irvine Valley's men's basketball team saw one of its best ever seasons come to a close Wednesday in the Southern California Regional Playoffs.

The Lasers lost in the second round at San Bernardino Valley.

Irvine Valley, which was seeded 18th in the playoffs, lost to No. 2 San Bernardino Valley, 65-49.

Irvine Valley ended the season, a season in which it was ranked No. 1 in the state for the first time in school history, with a record of 25-5.

San Bernardino Valley (26-7) got up big from the start.

San Bernardino Valley was up, 13-2, just five and a half minutes into the game.

The Wolverines later led, 30-8, and went into halftime ahead, 34-16.

Irvine Valley made a second half push to get closer, but ran out of time.

 The Lasers opened up the second half with a 23-9 run.

Irvine Valley found itself down only 46-39 with 10 minutes left.

But that would be as close as the Lasers would get.

San Bernardino Valley went on a 12-1 run over the next five minutes that put the game out of reach.

SBVC had three players score in double figures.

Sophomore guard Gerry Blakes led all scorers with 21 points.

Sophomore guard Tymarieh Dixon added 16 points and sophomore guard Keith Smith also contributed 16 points in the victory.

San Bernardino Valley ended up shooting 53.8 percent (21 of 39) from the field as a team in the game.

Irvine Valley, which shot just 27.8 percent (5 of 18) from the field in the first half and 31.2 percent (15 of 48) for the game, had just one player score in doubles figures. All-Orange Empire Conference first team player Shaquille Hunter finished with 13 points.

Freshman guard Jimmy Golden had eight points and sophomore guard Dathon Spencer came off the bench with six points for the Lasers.
