Men's basketball team rebounds in win over Fullerton

Irvine Valley's men's basketball team bounced back from a tough home loss to Santa Ana with a 71-60 victory at Fullerton in an Orange Empire Conference game on Thursday night.

The Lasers, ranked 10th in the state, got off to a solid start.

They out-scored the Hornets, 38-25, in the opening half.

Freshman guard Jimmy Golden had nine points and sophomore guard Shaquille Hunter added eight points in the first half.

For the game, Hunter had 13 points, Golden finished with 12 points, freshman forward Chris Porter added 11 points and sophomore forward Yanick Kulich contributed 10 points.

IVC shot 47.2 percent from the field for the game.

The win improved Irvine Valley's record to 23-4 overall and 8-3 in conference.

Irvine Valley plays its final game of the regular season next Wednesday night against Riverside at 7:30 p.m. It will be Coaches vs. Cancer night at Irvine Valley.

The Lasers currently sit in third place in the standings, a half of a game behind Saddleback for second and one and a half games in back of Santa Ana for first.

Irvine Valley is a long-shot to win the conference title, but could still finish in second place with a win over Riverside and a victory by conference-leading Santa Ana over Saddleback.

Playoff pairings will be announced next Monday.

On the season, Irvine Valley is led by Hunter, who is averaging 15.1 points, 3.6 rebounds and 1.3 steals per game. He ranks fifth in the conference in scoring. Sophomore center Declan Daly averages 9.0 points, 7.3 rebounds and 1.1 blocks. He ranks fifth in the conference in rebounding and is second in the conference in field goal percentage at 59.6 percent.

Golden averages 8.0 points, Porter averages 7.7 points and 4.7 rebounds, sophomore guard Dathon Spencer averages 6.3 points and 1.3 steals and freshman guard Jalen Hall averages 6.0 points, 3.1 assists and 1.4 steals for the Lasers.
