Men's basketball team holds off Grossmont

Irvine Valley's men's basketball team won its first round game in the Southern California Regional Playoffs Wednesday night.

The Lasers played a strong second half to beat Grossmont, 54-50.

Irvine Valley, which is seeded 18th in the playoffs, knocked off No. 15 Grossmont.

The Lasers improved their record to 25-4 on the season.

Irvine Valley moves on to face No. 2 San Bernardino Valley on Saturday.

In the win over Grossmont, Irvine Valley got 19 points from sophomore guard Shaquille Hunter. Hunter made 5 of 8 three-pointers on the night.

Freshman forward Chris Porter added nine points, sophomore center Declan Daly had 10 rebounds to go along with four points and freshman guard Jalen Hall finished with seven points and four assists for the Lasers.

Irvine Valley helped limit Grossmont to just 34.0 percent (17 of 50) shooting from the floor in the game.

IVC shot 47.6 percent (20 of 42) from the field as a team.

It was the ninth time this season that Irvine Valley has held an opponent to 50 points or less.

The Lasers trailed, 24-23, at halftime, but out-scored Grossmont in the second half, 31-26.
