Baseball team cruises in 11-2 victory over Rio Hondo at home

The Irvine Valley baseball team got its game in on Saturday at home despite the wild weather the past few days around Southern California.

And the Lasers shined through the rain with contributions all around in a 11-2 nonconference win over Rio Hondo.

Irvine Valley improved its record to 4-2 overall with the win.

IVC scored a run in the first inning on an RBI single up the middle by freshman designated hitter Shaun McCaghren that scored freshman second baseman Chase Quezada.

And the Lasers put the game away in the bottom of the fifth inning with five runs, highlighted by Quezada's first college home run - a solo shot to left field.

Later in the frame, freshman third baseman Nomar Vasquez, who had an impressive day, doubled to bring in two runs and give IVC a 4-0 lead.

Sophomore catcher Jimmy Zakhar and freshman right fielder Drew Seidel each had RBI singles to put the Lasers up, 6-0.

That was more than enough for sophomore right-handed pitcher Caden Byers. He picked up his second win of the year and lowered his ERA to 1.53 with six shutout innings.

Byers gave up just two hits and one walk with no runs and four strikeouts. He was in command all day.

Sophomores Cole Dietsch and Tyler Eastham each followed up with scoreless innings for the Lasers.

IVC added a single run in the bottom of the sixth and scored two in the seventh and two more in the eighth.

The highlight of the late inning scoring was Seidel's inside the park home run in the bottom of the eight inning. He hit a pitch to the wall in center field and beat the relay throw home.

On the day, Quezada went 2 for 4 with two walks, the home run, four runs scored and one RBI from the leadoff spot.

Vasquez went 2 for 3 with two walks, one run and three RBI. Seidel, along with his home run went 2 for 5 with one run and two RBI.

McCaghren, sophomore center fielder Shane Stafford and freshman second baseman Gavin Grutzmacher each had two hits and freshman first baseman Jackson Snitko had a hit, scored a run and walked three times.

Snitko had some of the best defensive plays of the day for the Lasers, picking baseballs at first base.

The Lasers play again on Tuesday, traveling to College of the Desert for a 1 p.m. game.
