Alumni Report: Colin Conroy was hitting his stride at Towson

Former Irvine Valley star infielder Colin Conroy and the Towson University baseball team looked like it was just starting to hit its stride when the season was canceled in March due to the coronavirus pandemic.

Conroy was a two-year player and all-Orange Empire Conference shortstop for the Lasers.

His NCAA Division I Towson squad had a record of 7-8 overall and had won three straight games, including beating George Washington, 5-2, on Mar. 10 when the season was halted.

Conroy commented about it in the local The Towerlight, Towson's campus and community newspaper.

"Kinda in shock, mostly that's not gonna happen," he said to The Towerlight about the season coming to a close. "I think when the NBA suspended their season, our teammates texted each other there's no way. Then, the next morning in the locker room, we find out from a tweet that said the season was suspended. We were sitting there and really quite didn't know what to say."

Conroy was Towson's starting shortstop for two seasons, although his 2019 junior campaign was cut short because of an injury.

In 2019, he led the team with a .288 batting average through 16 games when he was injured. He finished with eight runs and six walks. Conroy went 2 for 4 in his Towson debut against Davidson. He finished his season on six-game hitting streak.

So far in 2020 as a senior, Conroy had started 14 of 15 games at shortstop. He was second on the team in stolen bases with four, walks with eight and runs scored with 11. He was hitting .213 through Towson's 15 games. And he put together a six-game hitting streak from Feb. 22 to Mar. 4, which was the longest on the team.

His best year at Irvine Valley came as a sophomore in 2018. He played in 32 games and ended up hitting .314 with a .462 on base percentage, 25 runs, 22 walks and six stolen bases. He was third on the team in batting average and second in runs scored. He also struck out just nine times on the year in 102 at bats with 22 walks.

The former Servite High standout was named second team all-Orange Empire Conference in 2018 for IVC.
