Baseball team takes care of San Diego Mesa in 2020 opener

Irvine Valley's baseball team made a statement in its first game of the 2020 season.

The Lasers scored the first 11 runs of the game before coming away with a 11-6 win at San Diego Mesa on Tuesday afternoon.

Mesa was a playoff team and won 28 games in 2019.

Irvine Valley scored two runs in the top of the second inning, added two more in the top of the fifth on a two-run home run by sophomore catcher Collin Villegas and then blew the game open with three runs in the sixth inning.

The Lasers added two more runs in the seventh and two more in the eighth to go ahead, 11-0, before San Diego Mesa got on the board with three runs in the bottom of the eighth inning.

IVC also got a strong start on the mound from freshman right-hander Dallas Carpenter. He set the tone, going five shutout innings. Carpenter gave up just four hits and one walk and had two strikeouts.

Freshman Steve Hayden entered after that and threw two scoreless innings.

On offense, IVC finished with 13 hits. Sophomore shortstop Robert Haw, sophomore third baseman Dante Faicchio and sophomore designated hitter Dante Catalino each had multi-hit days.

Leading off, Haw went 2 for 4 with a run scored and two walks. Faicchio was 2 for 5 with a double, a run scored and two RBI and Catalino went 2 for 4 with one RBI.

Villegas was 1 for 2 with three walks and three RBI and sophomore outfielder Joey Lapolla provided a double and two RBI.

In all, 10 different IVC players had hits on the day and seven different Lasers provided RBI.

Irvine Valley plays again on Thursday, hosting San Diego Mesa at 2 p.m. in the Lasers' home opener.
