Baseball team drops first game of series at Orange Coast

Irvine Valley's baseball team couldn't follow up its great win on Saturday over the top-ranked team in the state on Monday.

Irvine Valley, which beat Santa Ana, 9-7, Saturday in the final game of that three-game set, fell to Orange Coast, 7-1, Monday in a game on the road.

With the threat of week-long rain in the forecast, the Pirates (11-8, 2-2 in the Orange Empire Conference) and the Lasers (11-10, 1-3) moved their game up a day and made sure of at least one game this week.

The Lasers couldn't get anything going against OCC starting pitcher Michael Ryhlick.

The sophomore lefty allowed just one run on five hits with four walks and three strikeouts over eight innings to improve his record to 2-2 overall.

Irvine Valley scored the first run in of the game in the top of the first inning, getting a run on a RBI single by sophomore third baseman Dante Faiccchio.

Orange Coast answered with two runs in the bottom of the first inning and then followed with a run in the second and two more in the bottom of the fifth inning to take control.

Irvine Valley ended with six hits on the day.

Sophomore catcher Collin Villegas had two of the hits for the Lasers.

David Morgan was leading the OCC offense, going 3 for 4, including two doubles and a two-run home run, two runs scored and four RBI.

Chase Hanson was 2 for 4 with two RBI and Logan Jackson added two hits and a run scored.

Freshman Steve Hayden (3-1) took for the loss for IVC. He went six innings and allowed five runs on six hits and one walk with one strike out.

Game two of this week's series will now take place on Wednesday at 2:30 p.m. at Irvine Valley. The game was slated for Thursday, but has been pushed up a day to beat more rain.
