Alumni Report: Gabriela Griego named all-conference in beach

Former Irvine Valley standout volleyball player Gabriela Griego was named all-Big West Conference for the second year in a row at Cal State Northridge in beach.

She was selected second team all-conference along with her pair partner Mayamay Brown at the conclusion of the 2024 spring season.

Griego earned all-conference accolades for the second time, while Brown is a first-time honoree in her debut season.

The CSUN pair won a team-high 19 times this season, all coming on the No. 1 court. Griego and Brown came within one win of the program pairs record for wins set by Griego and Abbey Sweeting in 2023 when they won 20 times.

Griego and Sweeting went on to also earn second-team accolades last season.

This season, Griego and Brown had one four-match win streak and a pair of three-match win streaks while posting wins over the top pairs from No. 19 Arizona, Nebraska, Texas, SE Louisiana, and Tulane.

Individually, Griego finished her CSUN career with 40 wins, all coming in 2023 and 2024.

"I'm stoked that MayaMay and Gaby earned all-conference recognition," said CSUN head beach coach Ari Homayun. "They played such an important role for us this year. They were motivated, determined, and consistent. Playing at the 1s, they were constantly competing against some of the best players in the country and they proved they should be up there with the rest of them. Gaby has come such a long way, and I'm glad she was able to end her senior year that way. And I am so excited about MayaMay's future."

CSUN has now had 12 pairs earn all-conference honors since 2016, the first season of Big West beach volleyball.

In 2023, Griego and Sweeting earned second team honors.

CSUN finished the 2024 season with a 16-21 overall record, falling to Long Beach State on day two of the 2024 Big West Championship.

Northridge finished the 2023 season with a 17-16 overall record, which tied the record for most season wins in program history.

Griego spent two seasons playing beach and indoor at Irvine Valley. She earned first team all-Orange Empire Conerence honros for the Laser beach team in 2019.

Irvine Valley won the OEC title in 2019.

Griego also earned first-team, all-conference honors as an outside hitter on the indoor team that year. She averaged 2.95 kills and 0.51 digs for IVC.

Griego was also named to the CCCAA State All-Tournament Team.
