Irvine Valley's No. 1 pair of sophomores Tessa Marocco and Kenzie Dews stood out at the 3C2A Women's Beach Volleyball State Championships this past weekend.
The duo finished tied for sixth overall in the event after reaching the quarterfinal round on Saturday.
And it was warm in Northern California on Saturday with temperatures reaching the low 90's.
Marocco and Dews won their first two matches in pool play at West Valley.
The duo, which was seeded fifth from So. Cal., had a walk-over win in a first-round match over a team from MiraCosta.
Marocco and Dews then defeated the North No. 4 seed Abigail Seabury and Mackenzie Natusch from Folsom Lake, 21-18, 21-13 to advance to Saturday.
The IVC team defeated El Camino's top team of Bridget Dorr and Ryan D'Angelo, 22-20, 21-15, in the round of 16, but then fell to San Diego Mesa's team of Kaylin Jager and Myah Gomez, 21-18, 21-178, in the quarterfinals.
Jager and Gomez went on to win the state championship, beating a team from Moorpark, 21-15, 19-21, 15-10 in the final.
IVC's pair of sophomore Natalia Brandlin and freshman Audrey Fowler won a match by forfeit over a team from Monterey Peninsula and then were defeated by the So. Cal. No. 6 team from El Camino Dorr and D'Angelo in a tough, three-set match, 21-18, 14-21, 15-4.
Irvine Valley won the Orange Empire Conference with a record of 14-0 and made the So. Cal. Regional Playoffs.
