Irvine Valley freshman men's tennis player Javier Callejo was recently named the California Community College Athletic Association and California Community College Sports Information Association men's state athlete of the month for April.

Callejo won the Irvine Valley men's tennis program's first ever state singles title in Ojai. He defeated defending state champion Hiro Koyanagi of Ventura, 7-5, 6-2, in the final.

Callejo handed Koyanagi only his second loss of the season in singles.

Callejo, the No. 10 seed, knocked off the No. 8, 4, 7, 2 and 1 seeds on his way to the final.

He also teamed up with IVC teammate Sam Cohen to finish as the runner-up in the state doubles competition.

The duo lost to Laser teammates Bruno Figlia and Scott Paz in the final, 5-7, 6-4; 10-4 in the super tiebreaker.

Callejo also helped Irvine Valley win its second straight CCCAA state team championship in April.

The Lasers defeated American River, the top team from Northern California, 5-1, in the state championship final.

Callejo ended up going 17-0 in singles on the season for IVC.
