Men's soccer team blanks Victor Valley to open the playoffs

Irvine Valley's men's soccer team scored an impressive 56 goals during the regular season.

The Lasers kept up finding the back of the net in the first round of the CCCAA Southern California Regional Playoffs on Saturday.

IVC, seeded fourth, blanked No. 13 Victor Valley, 4-0, at home.

The win moved the Lasers on to the second round of the playoffs next Tuesday.

It will be another home game for Irvine Valley as it takes on No. 5 Rio Hondo. The Roadrunners edged No. 12 LA Mission in penalty kicks, 6-5, on Saturday.

Irvine Valley out-shot Victor Valley, 16-6, in its victory, including, 11-0, in the second half.

IVC scored three goals in the final 45 minutes to put the match away.

The Lasers scored their other goal early on. Sophomore Sean Goode beat Victor Valley keeper Arron Herrera after a corner kick by sophomore midfielder Jose Gamboa in the seventh minute.

Irvine Valley was up, 1-0, at the half.

IVC added to its lead just a minute into the second half when Goode send a ball through to sophomore forward Connor Elder, who finished off the breakaway.

The Lasers increased their advantage to 3-0 just five minutes later. Sophomore midfielder Jose Rivera scored on a hard shot to the upper right corner off a pass from sophomore midfielder Albert Chavez.

IVC put its fourth goal on the board when Elder got open behind the Victor Valley defense again and scored off a long punt by freshman keeper Blake Sigler in the 80th minute.

The defense, anchored by sophomores Joseph Ferguson, Taylor Davison and Scott Clark and freshman Alfonso Quezada-Osorno kept Victor Valley at bay most of the afternoon and especially in the second half.

Sigler had to make three saves, including a diving one in the first half. But he wasn't tested the entire second half.

Irvine Valley, which finished second in the Orange Empire Conference and was ninth in the final state poll, improved its record to 15-4-3 overall.

Goode's goal gave him a team-leading 18. The goal and assist lifted his point total to 40.

Elder's two goals put him at 13 on the season and Rivera's goal gave him 12.

And Sigler earned his sixth shutout of the year.
