Irvine Valley's men's soccer team, coming off a solid performance in the Hartnell College Tournament last weekend, defeated Moorpark, 3-1, nonconference match on Wednesday at home.

Irvine Valley finished in third place in the Hartnell tourney, which always includes many of the top teams in the state.

"This was our fourth game in six days," IVC coach Martin McGrogan said after the win over Moorpark. "We rested some starters in the first half and began a little slow today, but in the second half we turned it on. I thought we played with a lot of class."

Irvine Valley took the lead in the 12th minute. Freshman forward Daniel Segal scored his first goal as a Laser, taking a pass from sophomore midfielder Joseph Ferguson and beating Moorpark keeper Jose Zepeda.

Irvine Valley goalie Blake Sigler kept Moorpark off the board in the opening half with three saves, including a nice one at the near post.

Moorpark tied the contest five minutes into the second half.

Sigler made a nice diving save on a shot by Moorpark's Trent Madison. But the ball wasn't cleared out and a Jose Ramos found Madison, who one-timed a shot in to tie the score at 1-1.

Irvine Valley picked up the pace after that behind sophomore midfielder Jose Rivera.

Rivera set up sophomore Connor Elder for the game-winning goal in the 70th minute to give Irvine Valley a 2-1 lead. It was Elder's team-leading fourth goal of the season.

And then two minutes later, Rivera rolled a pass to sophomore midfielder Albert Chavez, who rocketed a one-time shot from just outside the box past Ramos to make it 3-1.

"I thought we played some real good football," McGrogan said. "We still have some work to do in the back, but I'm happy with where we are at."

Irvine Valley ended up out-shooting Moorpark, 17-10, including, 10-6, in the second half.

Sigler made six saves in goal for the Lasers.

Irvine Valley plays again next Tuesday, traveling to Rio Hondo for a 4 p.m. match.
