Men's basketball team done in by top team in state

Irvine Valley's men's basketball team showed it still has some work to do Tuesday night.

The Lasers, coming off winning their own Irvine Valley College Classic last Saturday, lost to Mt. San Antonio College, 60-46.

Mt. SAC was the top-ranked team in the latest state poll, which was released on Monday.

IVC was ranked No. 11 in Southern California.

The Mounties got off to a quick start and led Irvine Valley, 39-24, at halftime.

Irvine Valley played better in the second half in the loss. IVC out-scored Mt. SAC, 22-21, in the final 20 minutes.

The Lasers were led by sophomore guard Chris Salas, who finished with 20 points. The 20 points was a career high for Salas at IVC.

Salas scored 15 of those points in the second half. He also made five three-pointers on the night.

But Salas was the only IVC player in double figures. Sophomore center Andrew Bastien and freshman forward Craig Magyar each had five points and sophomore forward Chris Porter added five points.

Mt. SAC had three players score in double figures, led by Stephaun Branch with 18 points.

Irvine Valley's record slipped to 3-2 overall, while Mt. SAC stayed unbeaten at 8-0.

Irvine Valley doesn't play again until Thursday, Dec. 4 when it takes part in the Monterey Peninsula Tournament. The Lasers open against Gavilan at 3 p.m. on Dec. 4.
