Men's basketball team falls to Cuyamaca in 2014-15 opener

Irvine Valley's men's basketball team got its 2014-15 season off to a rough start on Thursday night at home.

The Lasers had a cold shooting night and fell, 69-55.

Cuyamaca improved its record to 2-2 on the season.

Irvine Valley had trouble scoring all night. The Lasers shot just 29.4 percent (20 of 68) from the field for the game, including only 25.7 percent in the first half when they fell behind, 41-25.

Irvine Valley was paced by sophomore guards Jalen Hall and Jimmy Golden, who had 11 points each.

Freshman forward Jacob Dean was solid off the bench with nine points and 12 rebounds, including five offensive rebounds.

Sophomore guard Chris Salas added eight points and freshman forward Tanner Aguera had seven points for IVC.

Cuyamaca jumped out to the 16-point halftime lead thanks to shooting 56.5 percent (13 of 23) from the field and 50 percent (6 of 12) from three-point range.

The Coyotes ended up shooting 50 percent (23 of 46) for the game.

They had five players score in double figures, led by Tim Pace and Kendal Kirkland with 12 points apiece. Kirkland also had six rebounds and three assists for Cuyamaca.

Irvine Valley plays again next Thursday at 6 p.m. in a first-round game of the Irvine Valley College Classic.

The eight-team tournament, which runs Nov. 20-22, begins on Thursday at 2 p.m.
