Irvine Valley Classic basketball tournament starts Thursday

The 20th Annual Irvine Valley College Classic men's basketball tournament tips off this afternoon.

The eight-team tournament will feature four games on Thursday, four more on Friday and then three on Saturday.

The championship game will be on Saturday at 4 p.m.

Three teams from the preseason California Community College Coaches  Association Rankings are in the field.

Santa Monica was ranked sixth, Irvine Valley was ranked seventh and Cerritos was ranked 12th in Southern California in the poll.

Host Irvine Valley opens up against Santa Monica on Thursday at 6 p.m.

Other opening day games include Long Beach City against Cuyamaca at 2 p.m., Ventura vs. Canyons at 4 p.m. and Imperial Valley taking on Cerritos at 8 p.m.

Ventura has the best record so far with a record of 4-2 heading into the event.

The Pirates won the consolation title at the Alvin Hunter Classic at San Bernardino College last weekend, beating College of the Desert, 99-92, for the title.

Irvine Valley has a record of 0-1 after getting off to a rough start last Thursday night at home.

The Lasers had a cold shooting night and fell to Cuyamaca from San Diego, 69-55.

Cuyamaca improved its record to 2-2 on the season.

Irvine Valley had trouble scoring all night. The Lasers shot just 29.4 percent (20 of 68) from the field for the game, including only 25.7 percent in the first half when they fell behind, 41-25.

Irvine Valley was paced by sophomore guards Jalen Hall and Jimmy Golden, who had 11 points each.

Freshman forward Jacob Dean was solid off the bench with nine points and 12 rebounds, including five offensive rebounds.

Sophomore guard Chris Salas added eight points and freshman forward Tanner Aguera had seven points for IVC.

Irvine Valley has three returning starters this season in Hall, Golden and forward Chris Porter. Porter was named all-Orange Empire Conference last season after averaging 7.7 points and 4.6 rebounds per game.
