Women's volleyball team splits at San Diego Mesa quad

Irvine Valley's women's volleyball team went on the road for a pair of matches at the San Diego Mesa quad event on Friday.

The Lasers, ranked No. 8 in the state, battled back for a reverse sweep in the first match before falling to the sixth-ranked squad in California.

Irvine Valley fell behind in its first match of the day, losing the first two sets to MiraCosta.

But the Lasers rallied for a 22-25, 23-25, 25-14, 25-20, 15-8 win. 

IVC hit .247 as a team for the match and were led by sophomore opposite Jayli Nealy, who hit .370 and finished with 23 kills.

Sophomore outside hitter Chloe Swanson added 15 kills and 11 digs, sophomore outside hitter Angelina Griego ended with nine kills and 11 digs and sophomore outside hitter Emily Hon and sophomore middle blocker Kendall Fraser each had five kills. Hon also chipped in six blocks and Fraser had four blocks.

Sophomore libero Gabi Brown contributed a season-high 26 digs.

Freshman Mia Bertolone and sophomore Maddie Harkey shared the setting duties. Bertolone had 27 assists and 16 digs and Harkey finished with 20 assists and 10 digs.

The Lasers had to turn right around and take on host San Diego Mesa, which was the third-ranked team in Southern California and sixth in the state.

Irvine Valley fought in each game, but fell in four sets to the Olympians, 25-20, 21-25, 25-17, 25-21.

Nealy ended with 17 kills and 40 on the day. Freshman outside hitter Tessa Marocco contributed eight kills, Swanson had six kills and 12 digs and Griego added six kills and 10 digs.

Bertolone had 18 assists and 15 digs, Harkey finished with 16 assists and six digs and Brown had 10 digs.

The Lasers play again on Wednesday, traveling to Grossmont for a 6 p.m. contest. 

IVC then starts Orange Empire Conference play on Friday at Riverside at 6 p.m.
