Irvine Valley's women's volleyball team started a unique Friday on campus with a 25-18, 25-16, 25-17 nonconference victory over Moorpark.
It is one of two matches the Lasers are scheduled to host on Friday. It started at 11 a.m.
Irvine Valley, which is ranked No. 2 in the state and No. 1 in Southern California, turns around and plays host to San Diego City at 2 p.m.
The win over Moorpark was Irvine Valley's third sweep in a row and improved the team's overall record to 4-0.
The Lasers got a standout performance from sophomore Marisa Doran in the contest.
She finished with 17 kills and six digs. Doran also hit .560 on in the match.
IVC got off to a bit of a slow start in the match, but Doran was on top of her game and finished with eight kills in the first set alone to lift the Lasers to the victory.
Irvine Valley trailed much of the first set. It was down, 14-12, to the Raiders at one point. Doran and sophomore outside hitter Kobi Pekich responded with back-to-back kills to tie the score and IVC never looked back.
The score was tied at 17-17, but then the Lasers won three straight points to take total control. Sophomore middle blocker Annie Mitchem recorded a block and then a kill and Doran came through with a kill to give IVC a 20-17 lead.
Two more kills by Doran put Irvine Valley in front, 22-18. And a block by Doran three points later ended the set.
Irvine Valley pulled away midway through the second set. A kill by Doran and then a Moorpark hitting error gave IVC a 21-14 advantage. Later, an ace by freshman setter Makani Wall gave Irvine Valley set point. And the Lasers won the set on a net call on Moorpark.
Irvine Valley never trailed in the third and final set. Back-to-back kills by sophomore opposite Shaelyn Perez gave the Lasers a 15-9 lead. And a kill by Mitchem made it 17-11.
A kill and then an ace by Mitchem moved IVC ahead, 19-14.
Pekich ended the match a short time after with a kill.
Pekich and Mitchem each added six kills and six digs. Freshman middle blocker Hannah Matt added six kills, Perez had five kills, freshman libero Kayla Scheevel had six digs and sophomore setter Hailey Jones finished with 29 assists and eight digs.
