Standout volleyball player Annie Mitchem signs with Hawaii

Irvine Valley star sophomore women's volleyball player Annie Mitchem signed her letter of intent with the University of Hawaii last month.

Mitchem helped IVC finish off the best season in program history last weekend.

The 6-2 middle blocker was named the CCCAA State Championships tournament most valuable player after leading IVC to its first ever state championship.

The Lasers defeated Cabrillo, 25-15, 25-19, 22-25, 25-18, in the state final at Cabrillo in Aptos last Sunday.

Mitchem put on a clinic in the finals match with 24 kills (.488 hitting percentage), seven blocks and seven digs.

Her numbers in the team's three victories at the state tournament were staggering as she totaled 58 kills and 15 blocks in 11 sets while making only five errors in 99 attempts. She had a .535 hitting percentage in the event.

In IVC's four-set win over Feather River in an opening match of the state event, Mitchem shattered a state tournament record for highest kill percentage at .826. She finished with 19 kills in just 23 attempts.

The win completed an unbeaten year for IVC. Irvine Valley ended 2014 with a record of 27-0.

Mitchem helped Irvine Valley drop just seven sets all season.

"Hawaii is perfect fit and we are so happy for her," Irvine Valley coach Tom Pestolesi said. "She is as talented of a player as I have seen and she is going to get even better."

Mitchem was named all-Orange Empire Conference most valuable player for the second time in a row as well as an All-American for the second straight year.

She ended up leading the state in hitting percentage at .517. She finished fourth in blocks per set at 1.24 and 13th in kills at 4.26.

It was her all-around game that impressed most throughout the season, though. Pestolesi used Mitchem in all rotations this season.

She also averaged 2.46 digs and had 26 aces and 19 assists this year.

Mitchem had double-figure kills in 21 of 27 matches, but also recorded eight matches with double-figure digs.

"What I like the most is that she has been just so engaged in everything - personally, with her teammates and with her academics," Pestolesi said. "It has been great to see how she has grown as a person and it has made her an even better volleyball player. Our entire coaching staff has been so very proud of her this year."

In 2013, Mitchem was named the American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) 2-Year National College Player of the Year after helping IVC to a 24-2 record, a conference title and a third-place finish at the state tournament.

She ended the season ranked first in hitting percentage (.436) and blocks per set (1.61) while placing second in kills (309) and third in kills per set (3.64) in conference.

Mitchem also led the state statistics in total blocks (137) blocks per set (1.61).

Mitchem has also been a success for Irvine Valley on the sand. She has been a part of two straight club level Intercollegiate Sand Volleyball Conference State Championships.

She is headed to a University of Hawaii program, under the direction of head coach Dave Shoji, that had a record of 22-7 overall, 13-3 in the Big West Conference and reached the second-round of the NCAA Tournament.
