Women's soccer team plays Cypress tough before falling

Irvine Valley's women's soccer team stayed right with another top team from the Orange Empire Conference.

The Lasers played Cypress on the road last Friday in a conference match and fell in tight contest, 2-1.

Cypress improved to 6-1-1 overall and 3-0-0 in conference, while Irvine Valley fell to 3-3-3 overall and 1-2-1 in conference.

Irvine Valley has faced off against three of the top OEC teams in its first four conference matches.

Cypress cashed in on a rare opportunity late in the first half when forward Kristen Nolan scored on a pass from midfielder Taylor Jones to take a 1-0 lead.

Irvine Valley equalized when Cypress failed to clear the ball and sophomore forward Alexandra Benedict scored pff an assist from freshman defender Yvette Belman to make it 1-1 heading into halftime.

Early in the second half, Cypress midfielder Nicole Walters made a run down the left side and crossed the ball into Nolan, who scored her second goal of the game, giving the Chargers a 2-1 lead. 

Irvine Valley sophomore keeper Yesenia Pulido made four saves in goal.

The Lasers play again on the road on Tuesday in another conference match at Orange Coast.
