Irvine Valley Women's Basketball Tournament starts Thursday

The 13th Annual Irvine Valley Women's Basketball Tournament begins on Thursday afternoon with four games.

The Lasers open the tournament at 6 p.m. on Thursday against Southwestern.

Games are at 2 p.m., 4 p.m., 6 p.m. and 8 p.m. on Thursday. Four more games will be played on Friday, starting at 1 p.m.

Saturday's last day of action will include the consolation final at 12 p.m., the third-place game at 2 p.m. and the championship at 4 p.m.

Teams participating in the event include Irvine Valley, Southwestern, Long Beach City, College of the Desert, Rio Hondo, Grossmont, El Camino and Barstow.

Long Beach City and Desert kick off the tourney on Thursday at 2 p.m.

El Camino is the defending champion of the event having knocked off Long Beach, 55-42, a season ago.

The tournament features three teams that were ranked in the CCCWBCA South Region Preseason Poll.

They include Long Beach City at No. 9, Irvine Valley at No. 12 and El Camino at No. 14.

Long Beach has a record of 7-3 and has won two straight games. The Vikings took the consolation title at the Ventura Tournament two weeks ago, getting 22 points from Doylebonet Walker in a win over Taft.

Walker is averaging 16.6 points and Jada Haynes averages 12.3 points on the year for LBCC.

Irvine Valley has won four games in a row, including two at home last week.

The Lasers defeated Glendale, 68-51, on Wednesday and then beat El Camino, 60-57, on Friday behind 16 points from freshman forward Lexi Vail and 14 points from sophomore forward Kasey Smit.

Vail is averaging 13.8 points and Smit is averaging 11.5 points, 9.1 rebounds, 3.4 assists, 2.8 steals and 1.5 blocks per game for the Lasers on the season. 

El Camino has a record of 6-2 and is paced by Kayla Bibb, who is averaging 14.5 points and 8.6 rebounds and Amiete Nyingifa, who is averaging 10.6 points and 9.0 rebounds a game.

Barstow and Southwestern are new teams in the tournament this year. Barstow has a record of 5-4, while Southwestern is 4-5.
