Former women's basketball star helps lead APU to PacWest title

Former Irvine Valley standout women's basketball player Tara Casey helped Azusa Pacific win the PacWest Conference title last weekend.

The team won its second PacWest championship after posting a 86-68 win at Chaminade in Hawaii on Saturday evening.

Azusa Pacific shared the championship with Hawaii Pacific. This is the fifth season that Azusa Pacific has competed in the conference.

The win closed out the regular season for the 19th ranked Cougars, who moved their record to 27-3 overall while finishing league play at 18-2.

Azusa Pacific enters the postseason on a nine-game winning streak.

Casey, a senior guard, played in 21 games and started 18 contests for the Cougars. She averaged 6.9 points, 2.5 rebounds and 1.4 assists per game.

She ranked sixth in the team in scoring and scored in double figures in six games on the year.

Casey helped lead Irvine Valley to back-to-back So. Cal. Regional Final games while at Irvine Valley.

The 2014-15 team went 27-4, tied the program record for most wins in a season and was just one game short of reaching the state tournament.

After the 2014-15 season, she was named first team all-Orange Empire Conference. Casey averaged 11.2 points, 4.0 rebounds, 2.3 assists and 1.2 steals per game for the Lasers.

And in the 2015-16 year, Casey averaged 10.7 points, 5.2 rebounds, 2.2 assists and 1.7 steals per game.

She was selected to the South Region Third Team All-State squad and was first team all-conference once again.

Casey finished her two-year career at Irvine Valley averaging 11.0 points per game, 668 points and making 109 three-pointers. She also averaged 4.6 rebounds, 2.2 assists and 1.4 steals per game.
