Men's soccer team loses, 2-0, to Golden West

The topsy-turvy Irvine Valley men's soccer season took another turn Friday afternoon at home.

Irvine Valley lost its third straight match, falling to Golden West, 2-0, in an Orange Empire Conference match.

IVC had won three matches in a row before the current skid. The team has also tied eight matches this season.

Irvine Valley's record fell to 3-8-8 overall and 3-6-3 in conference, while Golden West improved to 9-8-2 overall and 6-4-2 in conference.

Irvine Valley controlled most of the play in the opening half and had the better chances to score.

IVC's best opportunity came in the 11th minute when sophomore forward Joe Rousseau got behind the Golden West defense on the right side and fired a low shot that went just left of the goal.

The second half was more back and forth.

Max Hubert flicked a shot wide of the goal for Golden West in the 57th minute.

In the 64th minute, Irvine Valley sophomore forward Omid Kazemi hit a shot from 25 yards out that hit the left post. The ball bounced to Rousseau and he tried to score to the right side, but Golden West keeper Daniel Elias was able to scramble and knock the ball away.

Kazemi had another shot on the run a few minutes later that was saved by Elias.

In the 79th minute, Golden West took the lead.

A ball was played through the IVC defense and Golden West's Max Hubert and Laser freshman keeper Bryce Williamson raced after it in the box. Williamson clipped Hubert and a foul was called.

Gabriel Barriga finished the penalty kick to the lower right corner for a 1-0 lead.

Golden West made it a 2-0 game with just three minutes left to play. Jaime Rios hit the post with a shot and Kyle Nicolau was in the right place to knock the ball into the net.

Williamson ended up making four saves for Irvine Valley and Elias had five saves for Golden West.

Irvine Valley plays again next Tuesday, traveling to Santa Ana for a 3 p.m. conference match.
