Men's soccer team finishes season with a tie

The Irvine Valley men's soccer team finished its 2013 season with a 2-2 tie against Cypress on Friday afternoon in an Orange Empire Conference match at IVC.

The tie summed up much of Irvine Valley's season. The Lasers ended up with nine draws on the year.

Irvine Valley's record finished up at 3-9-9 overall and 3-7-4 in conference. Cypress ended up 3-14-4 overall and 1-11-2 in conference.

The tie snapped a four-match losing streak for the Lasers and a nine-game skid for the Chargers.

Cypress opened the scoring midway through the opening half when Jordan Hunter connected on a free kick from 25 yards out. His shot found the upper left corner of the net.

Irvine Valley had its chances, including a good one for sophomore forward Joe Rousseau in front of the goal shortly after.

But the Lasers found the back of the net to tie the match two minutes before the end of the first half.

Sophomore forward Omid Kazemi made a nice run down the right side and crossed the ball back in the box to sophomore forward Abraham Montano, who one-timed it in. It was Montano's second goal of the season.

Each team scored a goal quickly in the second half.

IVC struck first.

After Montano pressured the Cypress defense into a bad pass, Kazemi took control and scored in the 47th minute to make it a 2-1 game for Irvine Valley. It was his second goal of the season.

But just two minutes later, Cypress answered with a goal. It again came off a free kick.

The ball deflected off of Irvine Valley's wall and was loose in the box. Evan-Lawrence Davis was in the right spot to score and tie the match at 2-2.

IVC had numerous free kick and corner kicks in the final 15 minutes of the match, but couldn't find a goal.

Freshman keeper Bryce Williamson made three saves in goal for IVC, while Cypress goalie Daniel Ruiz made four saves.

The match was the final one at IVC for sophomores Andres Valentin, Josh Davis, Joe Rousseau, Montano, Kazemi, Luis Calderon and Daniel Totays.

Totays, Rousseau and freshman midfielder Alejandro Velazquez led the team in scoring on the season with three goals each. Freshman Bogarth Avalos led the squad in assists with four.
