Baseball team takes second in a row, guarantees series win

Irvine Valley's baseball team clinched its Orange Empire Conference series with Golden West with its second straight victory over the Rustlers on Thursday at home.

After winning at Golden West, 6-4, in 10 innings on Tuesday, the Lasers took control much earlier in the game on Thursday.

IVC scored eight runs in the bottom of the second inning to erase a two-run deficit and cruised to a 10-5 victory.

Irvine Valley improved its record to 12-27 overall and 2-18 in conference play.

Every starting position player had at least one hit in the game for the Lasers, led by sophomore left fielder Drew Porter, who went 2 for 4, with a home run, two runs and three RBI.

His three-run home run capped an eight-run outburst for Irvine Valley in the bottom of the second inning that gave the Lasers a 8-2 lead.

Sophomore shortstop Nick Madole also had a two-run single and sophomore first baseman Casey Kudell, freshman third baseman Kevin James and sophomore second baseman Nolan Cusey each added RBI hits in the frame.

The Lasers scored two more runs in the bottom of the fifth inning to increase their advantage to 10-2. Kudell had an RBI fielder's choice and sophomore catcher Connor Tallakson added an RBI single.

Along with Porter for the Lasers, James, sophomore designated hitter Adrian Reveles, sophomore right fielder Noah Madole and Kudell each had two hits on the day.

Irvine Valley finished with 14 hits as a squad.

Sophomore right-hander Austin Chapman (3-6) earned the win on the mound for IVC. He went five innings and gave up two runs on seven hits and two walks with four strikeouts.

Sophomore reliever Nate Skorheim picked up his third save of the season by pitching the last four innings. He allowed three runs on four hits with two strikeouts.

Golden West (20-19, 6-14) was paced by Dylan Lina, who had three hits, including two home runs and three RBI. Preston Allen added two hits, a home run and two RBI.

The two teams wrap up the regular season on Friday at Golden West at 1 p.m.
