Women's volleyball team goes to 12-0, earns 10th sweep of year

There was no letdown for the Irvine Valley women's volleyball team after being named the new No. 1 ranked team in the state this week.

The Lasers, who moved from second to first in the California Community College Women's Volleyball Coaches Association Top 25 State Poll on Monday, cruised to a three-set win at Santa Ana in an Orange Empire Conference match on Wednesday night.

IVC earned its 10th sweep in 12 matches this year and improved its record to 12-0 overall and 6-0 in conference play with a 25-14, 25-14, 25-5 win over the Dons.

Irvine Valley remained the only undefeated team in the state.

The five points in the third set was the least given up by the Lasers in a set this year.

Irvine Valley ended up hitting .402 on the night, including .484 in the opening set.

The first set was tied, 8-8, before IVC scored 17 of the final 23 points.

On the night, sophomore outside hitter Olivia Aguilar finished with a match-high 20 kills to go along with nine digs. She also hit .679 with the 20 kills in 28 attempts with just one error. Aguilar earned the team 20.5 points.

Sophomore outside hitter Taira Ka'awaloa added 11 kills, 10 digs, two aces and three blocks. Freshman outside hitter Alyssa Vortouni had six kills and hit .364 and sophomore opposite Diamond Brogan ended with four kills, three blocks and hit .667.

Sophomore libero Gabi Lau contributed nine digs and four assists and sophomore setter Megan Ramseyer finished with 27 assists, five digs and two blocks. Freshman setter Riley Mahan came on in reserve and chipped in seven assists and two digs.

The Lasers helped keep Santa Ana to a .000 hitting percentage in the match.

Irvine Valley will play another conference contest on Friday at Santiago Canyon at 6 p.m.
