Women's volleyball team has win streak snapped at Cypress

Irvine Valley's women's volleyball team gave No.9-ranked in the state Cypress a tough time the first time the two squads met up in an Orange Empire Conference match at IVC.

The Lasers had chances, but lost that match in five sets on Sept. 23.

Wednesday's rematch at Cypress was a different story.

Cypress stayed on top of the conference standings with a 25-14, 25-22, 25-17, win over the Lasers.

Cypress improved its record to 17-2 overall and 10-1 in conference. Irvine Valley, which had won five straight matches heading into Wednesday, slipped to 9-5 overall and 7-4 in conference.

Samantha Madrid led the Chargers with 17 Kills in 30 attempts, while Rockelle Gholson added 13 kills and eight digs. Samantha Martinez facilitated the Cypress offense, collecting 45 assists.

Irvine Valley got eight kills from freshman outside hitter Hannah Holder, seven kills and 12 digs from sophomore outside hitter Lucee Fitzgerald and six kills from sophomore opposite Juju Cannon. Sophomore libero Taylor Askins ended with 11 digs and sophomore setter Alissa Blevins had 20 assists.

Irvine Valley hit just .165 on the night, while Cypress hit .336.

IVC led in the second set, 9-5, but Cypress tied the set at 12-12 and then with the set tied, 20-20, the Lasers had back-to-back hitting errors.

The Lasers play again on Friday, hosting Riverside in another important conference match at 6 p.m.
