Women's volleyball team finishes perfect week with a sweep

Irvine Valley's women's volleyball team won its second match in a row and earned its third sweep of the season Friday night at home.

The Lasers beat Fullerton, 25-22, 25-20, 25-16 in an Orange Empire Conference contest.

IVC improved its record to 6-4 overall and got back to over .500 in conference at 4-3.

The Lasers stayed within striking distance at one of the top spots in the OEC standings. Irvine Valley trails Saddleback by a half match and Golden West and Riverside by two matches. With its win Friday night, Cypress stayed unbeaten in conference at 6-0.

On Friday at IVC, the Lasers broke open a close first set with a nice run.

Tied, 19-19, Irvine Valley scored four straight points. Freshman outside hitter Taira Ka'awaloa and sophomore opposite Juju Cannon had back-to-back kills and freshman middle blocker Kylie Miller came up with an ace to give IVC a 23-19 lead.

Fullerton pulled to within 23-21, but a kill by sophomore middle blocker Hailey Riden gave Irvine Valley set point. And then two points later, Ka'awaloa ended the set with a kill off the block.

The second set was also tight until IVC pulled away late. The set was tied, 17-17, when Irvine Valley went on a 6-2 run.

And then up, 23-20, Irvine Valley won the final two points. Miller and Ka'awaloa finished the set with consecutive kills.

Irvine Valley was in control from the start in the third set. A kill and then back-to-back aces by Miller put the Lasers in front, 13-6.

Later, a kill by freshman outside hitter Hannah Holder gave Irvine Valley a 15-7 lead.

A kill by sophomore outside hitter Lucee Fitzgerald gave IVC a 19-11 lead and then after a lift by Fullerton and a block by freshman right side Diamonique Brogan and Miller, the Lasers' advantage was 21-11.

Kills by Miller and Ka'awaloa moved Irvine Valley's lead to 23-13.

Irvine Valley won the set with another kill by Ka'awaloa.

Fitzgerald finished with 12 kills and six digs, Holder had nine kills, Ka'awaloa ended with seven kills and six digs and Miller had five kills and three blocks.

Sophomore libero Taylor Askins had eight digs, sophomore setter Alissa Blevins finished with 18 assists and six digs and freshman defensive specialist and setter Savanah Schroeder had 18 assists. seven digs and six aces.

The Lasers play again next Wednesday at Santa Ana at 6 p.m. in a conference match. It is IVC's only match of the week. The Lasers have a bye next Friday.
