Irvine Valley's women's volleyball team finished out its non-conference schedule with a match on the road Wednesday at NAIA four-year Vanguard University.
The Lasers, who are ranked 14th in the state in the latest community college poll, lost in three sets, but coach Tom Pestolesi said the team played well and continued to make progress.
Vanguard came out on top, 25-17, 25-16, 25-19.
Vanguard was ranked No. 10 in the nation in NAIA last week.
Irvine Valley was paced by sophomore outside hitter Hannah Matt, who finished with nine kills. Sophomore outside hitter Kayla Scheevel ended with six kills, 13 digs and two blocks.
Freshman opposite Olivia Aguilar had five kills and two blocks, while freshmen middle blockers Hailey Riden and Kayla Shields each finished with four kills apiece. Riden hit .800 in the match, while Shields also contributed two blocks.
Sophomore libero Emily Reinking added six kills and sophomore outside hitter Jenna Olbright ran the offense with 23 assists.
Irvine Valley's record dropped to 3-3 overall.
The Lasers open up Orange Empire Conference play on Friday at Santa Ana.
IVC is the two-time defending conference champion.
Irvine Valley has been paced thus far by Scheevel, Matt, Reinking, Olbright and Riden.
Scheevel is averaging 3.18 kills and 2.94 digs per set, Matt is averaging 3.24 kills, Reinking averages 3.59 digs, Olbright is averaging 10.59 assists and Riden is averaging 2.25 kills and hitting .649 for the team.
Irvine Valley is home again next Wednesday as it hosts a key conference match against Golden West at 6 p.m.
