Women's volleyball to host San Diego Mesa in playoffs Tuesday

The Irvine Valley women's volleyball team will host a first-round match in the Southern California Regional Playoffs.

The Lasers, who won the Orange Empire Conference, were seeded No. 8 and play against No. 9 San Diego Mesa on Tuesday at 6 p.m. at home.

IVC wrapped up its Orange Empire Conference schedule with a 25-22, 25-21, 25-17 sweep at Orange Coast last week.

Irvine Valley improved to 15-5 overall and 12-2 in conference.

The Lasers had already won their third conference title in a row. 

For the Lasers, Olivia Aguilar and Kayla Scheevel led the way over Orange Coast with 16 kills each. Scheevel also had 16 digs, four blocks and hit .520 on the night.

Hannah Matt added seven kills, Emily Reinking had 16 digs, Cozette Hawyrliak ended with four aces and Jenna Olbright had 37 assists.

Scheevel was named the co-MVP of the Orange Empire Conference with Olbright, Matt and Reinking being named first team all-conference and Aguilar and Hailey Riden selected second team all-conference.

Olbright leads the state in assists per set at 11.14. Riden led her conference in blocks per set at 1.05 and Hawyrliak was first in aces per set at 0.56.

Reinking was fourth in the OEC in digs per set at 4.09.

Scheevel averages 3.11 kills and 3.35 digs per set, Aguilar averages 3.03 kills per set and Matt averages 2.85 kills. IVC hits .320 as a team.

San Diego Mesa has a record of 16-8 overall.

It was 11-5 in the Pacific Coast Athletic Conference and finished in fourth place with a record of 11-5.

It won its final match of the regular season, beating Palomar in four sets on the road.

Isabel Miller had 28 kills and 17 digs and Mya Shannon-McGlothen ended with 15 kills. Lindsey Gordon had 56 assists, Lisabella Lemusu contributed 18 digs.

Miller led her conference in kills per set at 4.30 per set and total kills with 340. She was also fourth in the state in kills per set.

Gordon was second in the PCAC and fifth in the state in assists per set at 10.55, while Hailey Davidson ranked third in conference in blocks per set at 0.80.

Mesa hits .236 as a team.

The winner of Tuesday's match will move on to the second round on Saturday and face either No. 4 Canyons or No. 13 Ventura.
