Men's volleyball team stays at No. 3 in this week's state poll

Irvine Valley stayed at No. 3 in this week's California Community College Men's Volleyball Association State Poll

IVC, which was tied with Fullerton at the third spot last week, is No. 3 by itself this week.

The Lasers, who have a record of 4-1 overall, won at El Camino, 23-25, 25-15, 25-16, 25-15 on the road last Wednesday.

IVC hit .387 as a team for the match with sophomore outside hitter Patrick Furlong finishing with 18 kills and hitting .400 and sophomore middle blocker Matt August ending with 13 kills and hitting .400. Sophomore setter Austin McBain ran the offense for the Lasers with 42 assists.

Long Beach City remained at the top of the CCCMVCA State Poll for the third consecutive week after winning two more matches last week and improving its record to 6-0 overall.

The Vikings have dropped just two sets all season. They won at Grossmont, 25-22, 25-13, 25-16 last Wednesday behind nine kills from Steven Rotter and eight kills by Andrew Pearson. Long Beach City then defeated Miramar, 25-19, 25-17, 21-25, 25-20 on the road on Friday.

Orange Coast (5-1) stayed No. 2 in the rankings after sweeping previous fifth-ranked Pierce, 25-17, 25-16, 25-17 last Wednesday at home in its lone match of the week.

After Irvine Valley, Santa Barbara City jumped up two places in the rankings and stayed perfect on the year at 4-0 with a big win over previous No. 3 Fullerton, 25-19, 27-29, 25-20, 25-19, on the road last Wednesday. Howard Gomes had 14 kills, Blake Lockhart added 11 kills, Misaki Cramer ended with 15 digs and Adam Simonetti had 35 assists for the Vaqueros.

Santa Monica was the biggest mover in this week's poll, climbing three spots to No. 5. The Corsairs had a nice day last Friday, sweeping Fullerton, 25-17, 25-16, 26-24, and then Grossmont, 25-14, 28-26, 25-16 in a quad at Fullerton. Santa Monica has won three straight matches and improved its record to 3-2 overall.

Fullerton slipped to sixth and Pierce fell to seventh in the rankings. El Camino, Moorpark and Miramar round out the top 10. Miramar is making its first appearance in the rankings this week. The Jets went 1-1 last week, beating Antelope Valley in four sets and then taking No. 1 Long Beach City to four. Nik Gettman had 32 kills and Brody Smith finished with 24 kills in the two matches for Miramar.
