Irvine Valley sophomore men's volleyball player Patrick Furlong recently officially signed his national letter of intent with reigning NAIA National Champion Grand View University in Des Moines, Iowa.

Furlong, who was a star player for the Lasers for the past two seasons, left for Iowa last week.

Grand View defeated Benedictine Mesa 3-1 (25-23, 25-21, 22-25, 25-17) to win its first-ever national title in Grand View's own Charles S. Johnson Wellness Center.

The team finished with a record of 23-5 overall and was 10-0 in the Heart of America Conference.

Furlong, a two-year starting player for Irvine Valley, helped the Lasers reach the California Community College Athletic Association State Championship this past year.

The Lasers, who had a record of 16-6 on the season, fell in four sets to Orange Coast in the semifinals in late April. Irvine Valley finished the year being ranked No. 4 in the state.

Furlong, a 6-3 outside hitter, was a first team all-Orange Empire Conference player for Irvine Valley in 2018.

He averaged 3.04 kills per set, 1.04 blocks per set and 0.78 digs per set this past season.

Furlong led the Lasers in total kills (246), was second in total blocks (84) and fifth in digs (63). He also ranked tied for third on the team in aces with 12.

Furlong ranked third in the state in both total kills and blocks.

He had 15 matches with at least 10 kills and two matches with more than 15 kills. Furlong recorded a season-high 18 kills in Irvine Valley's four-set win at El Camino on Feb. 7.

Furlong ended the year in the semifinals of the state tournament with a 13-kill, 10-dig performance where he also hit .313 on the night against Orange Coast.

During his freshman year in 2017 for Irvine Valley, the former Capistrano Valley High standout averaged 2.44 kills, 1.28 digs and 0.78 blocks per set.
