As part of the 20th Annual Irvine Valley Scholar-Athlete Awards for the school year, the Laser women's tennis team has been announced as the college's scholar team for 2019-20.
The Lasers were outstanding on the court.
Irvine Valley was selected as the top squad in the state in final 2020 Intercollegiate Tennis Association California Community College Athletic Association Top 25 Rankings in late April.
The Lasers were off to the program's best ever start at 8-0. IVC had already defeated both Saddleback and Cypress, 9-0, and Irvine Valley won its toughest match of the year so far, 5-4, at El Camino on Feb. 11.
Irvine Valley's season was halted after its big 6-3 Orange Empire Conference victory over Riverside at home on Mar. 5. The Lasers' scheduled Mar. 12 match at Orange Coast and the rest of the season was halted due to the coronavirus pandemic.
They might have been even better off the court.
The squad earned a 3.69 grade point average with four players earning a 4.0.
Those players included sophomore Ariyana Ash, freshman Nicole Harper, sophomore Sabrina Mendy and freshman Soleil Zsibrita.
And six of seven players earned scholar-athlete recognition through IVC with a 3.5 or better.
The team was made up of Ash, Harper, Mendy, Zsibrita, Collete Kelly, Ashley Le and Justice Tien.
Irvine Valley women's tennis is coached by Ross Duncan.
