Irvine Valley's women's soccer team got off to a slow start against Cypress on Tuesday in an Orange Empire Conference match at home.

The Chargers scored a goal 20 seconds in, added another goal seven minutes later and went on to a 4-0 win over the Lasers.

Karla Lopez had two goals and one assist and Karina Romero also had two goals for Cypress, which improved its record to 13-3-1 overall and 9-3-1 in conference play.

Irvine Valley saw its record slip to 5-10-2 overall and 3-8-2 in conference.

Lopez scored for the Chargers shortly after the opening whistle. She took a pass from Gissel Avila and found the back of the net.

Romero scored again in the eighth minute, lofting a shot that found the back of the net from a tough angle in the right corner of the field.

Romero added goals in 41st and 49th minutes for Cypress.

Irvine Valley's best chances came on a corner kick that nearly curved in by freshman forward Brenda Chopin in the first half and by Chopin on two opportunities late in the second half.

IVC freshman goalie Rebecca Trejo made six saves in goal for IVC. Bethany Webb, who played the first half for Cypress, made three saves.

"We played better in the final 30 minutes," Irvine Valley coach Joe Supe said. "We were stronger on the ball and more physical. But we can't wait until we are down one or two goals to start attacking."

Irvine Valley plays again on Friday, traveling to Fullerton for a 3 p.m. conference contest.
