Esquivel places fourth, women's golf team takes fifth in desert

Irvine Valley freshman women's golfer Araceli Esquivel earned fourth place individually and helped the Lasers finish fifth as a team at the Desert Classic last weekend.

The tournament took place Friday and Saturday at the par 72 Bermuda Dunes Golf Course.

Esquivel shot rounds of 75 and 77 (152 total) to take fourth. Sophomore Marisa Bhanubandh came in sixth place with scores of 83 and 76 (159 total). Bhanubandh's second-day of competition included four birdies.

The 11-team tournament was won by state champion favorite Santa Barbara City College.

Irvine Valley ended with a score of 714. It finished behind Santa Barbara City, Cuyamaca, Saddleback and Mt. SAC.

The Lasers' third-player was freshman Akie Sannomiya, who finished at 191 (93 and 98). Sophomore Alexis McLachlan came in at 212 (102 and 110) and freshman Esther Kim was at 273 (132 and 141).

Irvine Valley has the next week off before competing in its first Orange Empire Conference match on Wednesday, Sept. 19. The match will be hosted by Orange Coast at the Mesa Linda course.
