In leading up to the start of the 2017-18 athletics campaign at Irvine Valley, which starts on Aug. 25 with the men's soccer team hosting Rio Hondo and the women's volleyball team hosting Citrus, the Laser athletic department will count down the top 10 IVC sports stories from the 2016-17 school year.
The No. 6 story on the list was the Irvine Valley women's golf team's accolades. The team made the CCCAA State Championships and two players earned major honors.
Freshman Araceli Esquivel placed sixth and earned a spot on the all-state team at the CCCAA Women's Golf State Championships at the Morro Bay Golf Course last fall.
Esquivel shot a round of 2 over par 74 on Sunday and followed that a 5 over par 77 on Monday to finish sixth with a score of 151. Irvine Valley finished in seventh place out of eight teams overall.
Sophomore Marisa Bhanubandh fired an even par 74 to win the scoring championship at the Orange Empire Conference finals at Los Serranos in Chino Hills.
Bhanubandh finished with a two-day total of 156. As a team, Irvine Valley ended up in second place in the final conference standings.
Irvine Valley finished in seventh place out of eight teams overall at the state tournament.
The Lasers ended with a two-day score of 701. IVC placed one spot ahead of conference rival Saddleback, which was eighth at 704.
Bhanubandh, who was the Orange Empire Conference player of the year, placed 10th individually at 155 (77 and 78).
Irvine Valley got a score of 182 (89 and 93) from freshman Akie Sannomiya and a score of 213 (109 and 104) from freshman Esther Kim.
