Women's basketball team battles, loses at Orange Coast

Irvine Valley played one of the best teams in the state tough for the second time this year, but fell on the road at Orange Coast.

The Pirates came out on top, 63-53, in an Orange Empire Conference contest.

IVC saw its record go to 15-7 overall and 6-2 in conference. The Lasers are two games behind OCC in the conference race.

Irvine Valley was paced by freshman point guard Haruka Mikuma with 14 points. Freshman guard Moka Saiki had 10 points and Makena Tomlinson ended with six points and 13 rebounds.

The big difference in the game was at the free throw line. Orange Coast went 19 of 25 and IVC was 8 of 9.

Orange Coast improved to 19-3 overall and 8-0 in the OEC.

Irvine Valley fell behind, 11-0, from the start and was trying to play catch-up the rest of the way.

The Lasers were down, 33-17, at the half, and down by 21 points in the third quarter.

Irvine Valley plays again on Wednesday, hosting Santa Ana in a conference game at 7 p.m.
