Women's basketball team drops tough game to Long Beach City

The Irvine Valley women's basketball team lost its first game of the 2023-24 season Tuesday night.

The Lasers, ranked No. 8 in the state, had their chances, but came up short in a 60-52 defeat to No. 19 Long Beach City.

Irvine Valley had its unbeaten streak to start the season stopped at six. The Lasers' record went to 6-1 overall and LBCC improved to 4-4.

The game was tied at 14 after the first quarter, but Long Beach City out-scored Irvine Valley, 10-6, in the second quarter to take control.

The Vikings also out-scored IVC, 20-16, in the fourth quarter to put the game away.

Irvine Valley was led by freshman guard Moka Saiki and sophomore wing Christen Ziska with 15 points each. Sophomore post player Makena Tomlinson added five points and 11 rebounds for the Lasers.

Brillana Boyd finished with 20 points and five rebounds and Chioma Okenwa had 12 points and 12 rebounds for the Vikings.

The Lasers play again on Friday, Dec. 8 at Glendale at 5 p.m.
