Honorable mention Story of the Year - Basketball standouts

In leading up to the start of the 2016-17 athletics campaign at Irvine Valley, which starts on Aug. 26 with women's soccer hosting a match, the Laser athletic department will count down the top 10 IVC sports stories from the 2015-16 school year.

Honorable mention on the list was two Irvine Valley women's basketball players earning some significant individual accomplishments. Sophomore guard Jordan Coleman was named honorable mention All-American for the second consecutive year in the Junior/Community College division by the Women's Basketball Coaches Association. And sophomore guard Tara Casey was named to the South Region Third Team All-State squad.

Coleman was also named all-Orange Empire Conference first team for the second year in a row.

The versatile 5-7 guard averaged 8.7 points, 3.6 assists, 3.5 rebounds and 2.0 steals per game through the regular season and 6.9 points, 3.5 rebounds, 4.4 assists and 1.9 steals per game in conference.

Coleman scored in double figures in 14 games. She had a streak of six straight games scoring in double figures early in the season with a season-high 24 points coming in a win over San Diego Mesa on Nov. 10, 2015.

Coleman and Casey helped Irvine Valley make its second straight trip to the Southern California Regional Playoff Finals this year. The Lasers ended the year with a record of 23-8 overall.

In her two-year career at IVC, Coleman averaged 9.5 points, 4.0 rebounds, 3.4 assists and 1.9 steals per game.

Founded in 1981, the Women's Basketball Coaches Association promotes women's basketball by unifying coaches at all levels to develop a reputable identity for the sport and to foster and promote the development of the game as a sport for women and girls.

Casey was also named first team all-Orange Empire Conference for the second year in a row.

Casey averaged 10.8 points, 5.3 rebounds, 2.3 assists and 1.6 steals a game and made a team-high 53 three-pointers through the end of the regular season.

She averaged 11.9 points, 5.4 points, 2.3 assists and 1.8 steals per game in conference play.

Casey finished her two-year career averaging 11.0 points per game, 668 points and making 109 three-pointers. She also averaged 4.6 rebounds, 2.2 assists and 1.4 steals per game.

She signed to play at Azusa Pacific in the fall.
