Women's basketball players honored at end of year banquet

Irvine Valley's women's basketball team held its annual end of the season banquet on Wednesday night.

The 2015-16 team finished with a record of 23-8 overall, went 9-3 in the Orange Empire Conference for second place, made the playoffs and reached a Southern California Regional Playoff Final for the second year in a row.

The squad also celebrated six sophomores in Jordan Coleman, Tara Casey, Erika Mercado, Patricia Tidwell-McClure, De'Jerre Scurry and Morgan Bryant.

Coleman, a guard, was named honorable mention All-American and first team all-Orange Empire Conference for the second year in a row.

The versatile 5-7 guard averaged 8.7 points, 3.6 assists, 3.5 rebounds and 2.0 steals per game through the regular season and 6.9 points, 3.5 rebounds, 4.4 assists and 1.9 steals per game in conference.

Casey, a guard, was picked to the South Region third team all-state team along with being first team all-conference. Casey averaged 10.7 points, 5.2 rebounds, 2.2 assists and 1.6 steals a game and made a team-high 58 three-pointers. She averaged 11.9 points, 5.4 points, 2.3 assists and 1.8 steals per game in conference play.

Bryant, a forward, was named second team all-conference. She averaged 7.8 points and 6.1 rebounds per game overall and 8.8 points 5.9 rebounds in conference.

Mercado, IVC's starting point guard, averaged 4.5 points, 3.9 assists and 3.2 rebounds per game. She averaged 3.0 points, 3.5 assists and 2.5 rebounds in conference.

Scurry, a power forward and post player, averaged 5.3 points and 3.9 rebounds a game. She also shot 49.2 percent from the field. In conference, Scurry averaged 4.4 points and 3.5 rebounds a game.

And Tidwell-McClure, a wing player, averaged 4.0 points, 1.8 rebounds and 1.1 steals per game overall and 3.4 points, 2.2 rebounds and 1.0 assists per game in conference.

Coleman and Casey were selected as the team's co-most valuable players at the banquet. Mercado was picked best defensive player and freshman forward Kydell Pearson was named best post defensive player.

The top rebounder award went to freshman forward Kasey Smit.

Bryant earned the most improved award and freshman redshirt player Serena Saba was named the academic athlete of the year.

IVC's prestigious HIP award went to Casey for her all-out effort, tenacity and leadership. The award stands for Hustle, Intensity and Pride.
