Women's badminton team captures SCC title, moves on to state

The Irvine Valley women's badminton team ended Pasadena City's reign of control over the South Coast Conference.

Irvine Valley, which was hosted into the South Coast Conference after the Pacific Coast Athletic Conference didn't have enough teams to compete, beat the Lancers, 17-4, on Friday at home.

Pasadena City had won five straight SCC titles.

IVC (7-0 in SCC play, 7-3 overall) will no play in the California Community College Athletic Association State Championship match on Thurs., May 12 at Fresno City against the top team in the state, DeAnza.

Irvine Valley will be playing in its first state final since 2011.

PCC's record dropped to 4-4 overall and 4-2 in conference action.

Against PCC, Irvine Valley won 10 of 12 singles matches and captured four of the five doubles matches.

IVC's No. 1 player Yan Luo beat Pasadena's Cindy Zhao, 22-20, 18-21, 21-12 and swept the Lancers' second player Nikki Ching, 21-10, 21-8.

Zhou defeated the Lasers' No. 2 player Chih Cheih Huang, 21-18, 24-22, but Huang outlasted Ching, 18-21, 21-8, 21-15.

Irvine Valley's Elise Lau, on the third court, went the distance to beat Joanna Dinh, 21-7, 16-21, 21-9 and defeated Pasadena No. 4 player Karen Chen, 21-10, 21-19.

PCC's fifth player Coco Wen won over Irvine Valley's Emily Feng, 15-21, 21-15, 21-19 for the only other Lancer singles win.

In doubles, the Irvine Valley No. 1 pair Lau and Huang rolled to wins over PCC's top duo Zho and Ching, 21-7, 21-11, and the Lancer No. 2 team of Dinh and Charlene Chen, 21-5, 21-7.

Zhao and Ching swept at No. 2 over Lau and Hsu, 21-10, 21-17 for the lone PCC point in doubles.

IVC's Lou and Hsu defeated Dinh and Chen, 21-17, 21-16 and Wai Kei Wong and Emily Feng beat PCC's Wen and Karen Chen, 21-11, 23-21. 

Irvine Valley hosts San Diego Mesa in its final match of the regular season this Friday at home at 2 p.m.
