Men's volleyball team sweeps San Diego Mesa

Irvine Valley's men's volleyball team prepped for its biggest week of the season so far with a sweep of San Diego Mesa in a Pacific Coast Conference match Friday night at home.

The Lasers ran their record to 7-3 overall and 3-0 in conference with a 25-20, 25-14, 27-25 win over the Olympians.

San Diego Mesa's record slipped to 2-9 overall and 1-3 in conference.

Irvine Valley and Orange Coast are the only teams without a loss in conference.

The Lasers play at Golden West, which was the state champion last year, next Wednesday and then play host to Orange Coast next Friday in Dig Pink Night at Irvine Valley.

"We are excited," IVC coach Ki Yi said about the upcoming schedule. "We are feeling pretty good since we have won three straight in conference. We know how tough Golden West and Orange Coast always are, but we can't wait for those matches."

In the win over San Diego Mesa, Irvine Valley got another strong conference performance from freshman opposite Davis Cannon. He led the way with 13 kills and hit .647 on the night. Cannon also had three digs and three blocks.

Freshman outside hitter AJ Hammer had seven kills and three digs and freshman outside hitter Cole Murray finished with four kills.

Freshman libero Ryan Spector chipped in six digs and freshman setter John Lasezky had 23 assists to go along with two digs and two blocks in the victory.

IVC did get a scare in the final set. San Diego Mesa had set points at 24-23 and 25-24. But freshman outside hitter Josh Schmidt came through with a kill to tie it at 24-24 and then sophomore middle blocker Taylor Kempkes had a kill to make it 25-25.

After a San Diego Mesa hitting error gave IVC match point at 26-25, Cannon ended things with a crosscourt kill.

The sweep was Irvine Valley's second of the season and seventh win in its last eight matches.
